TIPS ON COLOR

By BRUCE LEWIS

What I generally use is markers. I have a very extensive array of Prismacolor markers (If they read that...it might count as a plug ... hundreds of free sets will follow.) But seriously folks, a lot of how your color adds to your cartoon's finished look is the stock (paper) your original is drawn on. Depending on what you want your end result to look like...contemporary, soft, bright, etc. I use a smooth glossy stock for my more contemporary cartoons, it gives the finished result that "hey this might look good" look. For more of the soft "cutsie" cartoons, I use a watercolor stock. One little trick is to go back after you apply all your basic colors and add a real light cool grey, about 20% to your cartoon. Just use it to accentuate the colors you've already laid down. Don't go crazy...a little dab will do ya.
