GLOSSARY

ACETATE: A transparent plastic material used as a support for art work or an overlay.
ACRYLIC PAINT: A water soluble paint. A Polymer based in synthetic resin.
AIRBRUSH: A paint sprayer used to produce a fine spray of ink or paint
ALL RIGHTS: When a publisher purchases exclusive ownership of your cartoons. He can publish, republish or sell your cartoons without further compensation to you.
ANTHROPOMORPHISM: Giving human attributs to things other than people.
AUDIOVISUAL
PENCIL:
Pencils that have was lead. Ideal for working on film cel.
BALLOONS: An area within a cartoon frame which is separated by a line and contains the dialogue.
BENDAY: A thin film comprised of various densities of dots used by cartoonists to create halftones (shading). Also called Screen, Zip-a-tone and Mechanical tints.
BLEED: When one color runs into another or when ink soaks into the paper making an ink line fuzzy.
BLOCKING OUT: To paint out sections of art work before reproduction.
CEL ANIMATION: Animation inked and painted on a clear acetate "cel."
COLLATERAL: A printed self-promotion flyer used to market one's services.
COMPS: Comprehensive rough, yet detailed drawing to show client what finished art will look like.
COPYRIGHT: Exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish or sell literary or artistic work. All that is required to create a copyright is to print the word copyright and or the symbol ©, the year and your name.
FERRULE: The metal section of a brush that holds the bristles.
FIRST RIGHTS: Publisher gets to publish your cartoon the first time, one time. Artist agrees not to use the cartoon for a limited amount of time.
FIXATIVE: A clear solution that is sprayed over art work to form a protective coating without altering the the art work.
GAGLINE: The words printed directly beneath the cartoon, also called the caption
GOUACHE: An opaque type of watercolor, also called body color
GUM ARABIC: Water soluble gum used as a binder for gouache watercolor.
HATCHING: Drawing a series of lines and then drawing another series of lines at right angles to the first (crosshatching) to produce shading.
HOT-PRESSED: A reasonably hard, smooth surface paper. Mainly used for pen,ink or pencil
INBETWEENING: If a second of animation requires 12 cartoons, the animation studio may draw the first, sixth and twelfth frames. An inbetweener draws all the rest.
KERNING: Is when the letters in a word fit into eack other. Lettering done with kerning takes up less space.
KILL FEE: Portion of the agreed-upon price received for work that was started, but then canceled.
MECHANICAL TINTS: See Benday. Also called Screens and Zip-a-tone.
MAT: A dull, non-reflective surface.
MORGUE: A collection of pictures of all kinds for use as an art reference.
MOTION ECHOES: Lines used to show repeated movement.
NOT PAPER: Not hot pressed. This paper has a textured finish suitable for soft-pencil, gouache watercolor and ink wash.
O.A. : Publisher pays on acceptance of your cartoon.
O.P. : Publisher pays when he publishes your cartoon.
ONE-TIME RIGHTS: The right to publish your cartoon one time only (not the first time).
PANEL: A boxed-in cartoon, can be single panel, double panel or multiple panel.
PENCIL TEST: A test video used to make sure that pencilled animated scenes move well before they are inked.
PMT: Photomechanical transfer - a photostat produced without a negative, sort of like the Polaroid process.
P.O.P: Point of purchase - display device used at retail store to attract attention to a product. Also called P.O.S. (Point-of-sale).
POSTER PAINT: An inexpensive watercolor paint, coarser and less permanent than gouache
QUARTO: A piece of paper folded in half twice. A greeting card.
QUERY: A letter of inquiry to a editor or buyer that you would like to sell your cartoons to.
ROUGH PAPER: Comes in various roughness and thickness. Usually needs to be stretched before use.
ROUGHS: Preliminary sketches of cartoons.
ROYALTY: Agreed percentage paid by the publisher to the cartoonist for each copy of his work.
SCREENS: See Benday. Also called Mechanical tints and Zip-a-tone
SIGNAGE: Banners, posters - any graphic designed to be viewed from a distance.
SLANT: The subject mater of your cartoon. For example, if a magazine wants only cartoons about doctors.
SPOTS: A small drawing used to break up an otherwise boring block of text.
STRIP CARTOON: A series of of small cartoons which tell a story.
STYLO TIP PEN: A pen with a reservoir used by graphic designers. It produces a line of constant width. Interchangeable nibs for different widths.
VELOX: A photoprint that has been transformed into line art by means of a halftone screen.
WASH: The application of transparent color or watercolor black for a pastel or gray tone effect.
WHIZ LINES: Broken lines used in a cartoon to indicate motion, direction and speed.
ZIP-A-TONE: Trade name. See Benday
